American Legion San Dieguito Post 416

Foundation 416

Our Story

The San Dieguito American Legion was established in 1931 by World War I Veterans as a sanctuary and meeting place to help them deal with the horrors of that war. The San Dieguito (“Little San Diego”) area spans along the coast from Carmel Valley through most of Carlsbad and inland to Black Mountain. For the last 83 years this facility has served veterans, family members and the community as a whole, through charitable donations and volunteer efforts.

The original building was put in place shortly after World War II, but after decades of use, and virtually no available funds, the structure was in dire need of repair. In 2015, Post 416 launched a campaign to “Save Our Legion”. After much effort, many fundraising events, and a tremendously successful drive to increase membership, sufficient funds were raised to implement critical repairs, and some basic improvements.

Today the Post is once again a thriving and vibrant center for Veterans and the community, but the old building is not capable of meeting the needs of the organization going forward. So in early 2019, the Post established the American Legion Post 416 Foundation, a 501-c3 non-profit organization, charged with raising the funds to renovate the Legion, turning it into a state of the art meeting and community center, allowing the Post to continue its legacy of serving Veterans, their families, and local active duty personnel as well. You are welcome to review the currently proposed renovation plans and drawings.
